Faraday Future, the electric car start-up, has unveiled a car it calls “first of the species”. And it might well be—the FF 91 is a self-driving electric vehicle that can accelerate from zero to 60mph (97km/h) in just 2.39 seconds. That is because it has 1,050 horsepower under the hood. These numbers are faster than any other production electric car, including everything from Tesla’s stable.

Faraday Future calls it their “flagship vehicle”, and it is a geek’s delight. The first feature that’ll get your attention is the FFID. This is essentially a virtual identification system for the car’s driver and allows for security as well as detailed personalization. This will include the ability to share data such as navigation routes from your PC or smartphone with the car. There will be facial recognition technology which will allow specific customisation of features such as climate control, entertainment options and other driving preferences.

Faraday Future says that the FF 91 will have a range of 378 miles, but the real challenge could be the charging infrastructure, which rival Tesla Motors has painstakingly managed to get in place over the years.

The FF 91’s rear seats are designed to confirm with what Nasa scientists suggest is the natural body posture called the Neutral Body Posture.

The FF 91 will feature autonomous driving technology, with 3D lidar, 10 high-definition cameras, 13 radars for long and short range as well as 12 ultrasonic sensors.

Faraday Future is now taking pre-orders for the FF 91, on their website FF.com, for a $5,000 refundable deposit. Anyone pre-booking now will also have the option to upgrade to the limited 300 launch-only “Alliance Edition” variant. The deliveries of the FF 91 will begin sometime in 2018.
